You're all set, but please do not start your motor for even 2 seconds without muffs on and water flowing thru it.
Enjoy your outing.

I usually back the boat in so I can still jump in and I switch spots with my wife. She backs the last few feet and I unload the boat while she drives up to the lot.

I do the same thing, she also unhooks the bow strap too lol.

Well we managed to survive for two hours on the water. Will post the details later this evening.

Re: First boat outing this Saturday....need some loading tips?

Got to the lake at 9AM, an hour off schedule, but no big deal. Ramp was not too crowded when we got there. Parked in the lot and got everything ready, which took about 30 min. Launched the boat without incident. Wife pulled the trailer out of the water and managed to get it parked, which I was quite surprised by. It was her first time with a trailer.

Headed out and did some cruising for about 30 min and then beached for an hour and swam. Loaded back up and did a little more cruising, then headed back to the ramp. This is where the problems started.

The ramp was a little more active than when we arrived. The lunch crowd was beginning to show up and a good number of people were leaving. Beached the boat and headed up to get the truck. This was a 4 lane ramp with 3 slots open. Of course there is someone in the lane that I want to be in and they are taking their sweet time with doing things to the boat that should be done in the parking lot. I was wanting the outside lane that was nearest my boat so that I could just pull it on with a rope. I finally gave up on the guy moving and backed it down into the water in the next lane. Wife got in the truck while I backed away in the boat and attempted approach #1.

Found out pretty quickly that I should have practiced my low speed maneuvering while out in the open water. I made about 6 attempts at lining up with the trailer, but was never able to get it together. I got partially on one time, but ended up at about a 30 degree angle to the trailer and got the boat wedged in between the poles sticking up on the trailer. When I reversed out, it drug the trailer about 2 ft to the left. Of course everyone on the lake was now deciding to call it quits and there are half a dozen boats in the ramp area. I think I was getting confused when having the motor in reverse for some reason, possibly because all of the other boats were making me nervous.

Finally, a nice guy heads over to the truck to ask my wife if we need some help. He wades out into the water and guides the boat on as I approach. He said he was in the same situation (new boater) about 2 years ago and he just about tore his trailer up trying get his pontoon loaded. He suggested that I was doing too much wheel turning while trying to align myself. I thanked him, pulled up into the parking lot, got everything strapped down, and that was that.

It was an excellent first outing, but I have been beating myself up over the loading incident all day. Now I'm anxious about the next trip. I am definitely going to see if I can get someone from church or work to go out with me and practice before we go out again next weekend.

You'll get the hang of it. First time that I went out I got the boat back on the trailer first time! I was pretty proud of myself. It was the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th times out that I had problems (guess I got lucky the 1st time). I finally went to the lake on a weekday when it was dead and practiced docking, maneuvering, and putting it on the trailer for about 2 hrs. I'm not perfect, but getting better. Just don't get stressed. Glad to hear that you and the family had a good time!

Good job! Loading the boat on the trailer does take experience and you need to get used to driving the boat at slow speed to see how it reacts. When we first start driving a boat we expect it to act like a car which we are used to driving.

What I find works for me is to approach the boat going a little fast. Just seems that I can keep it straighter with just a little extra momentum. I line up as far back as I can and keep it going in a straight line. As I get closer to the trailer I start backing off the gas. When I get lined up in a straight line and start on the trailer I put it in neutral and let the momentum of the boat hit the bunks which pull it straight. At this point I usually turn the motor off and put the outdrive in trailer mode and winch it the rest of the way in. I may nudge it just a little with the engine it it's more than three or four feet from the winch.

What you really need to learn though is exactly the right depth for you trailer. Mine is with my trailer fenders at the water surface. If the trailer is in too far, the bunks will not catch the boat and straighten it out. If it's not in far enough, I can't pull the boat it with the winch. In that case I will have the wife, if she's with me, drop the truck back just a little. If I have to get out and do it myself that's fine too. I will not let a person I don't know behind the wheel of my truck or my boat.

I'm glad to hear you had a good time. Thats one of the things I love about boating, people are always willing to help you. I got my first boat this spring and am always learning soemthing new. But anytime I see someone that needs a hand I do my best to help. If its something as simple as helping someone get there boat on the trailer or give someone a tow. This place is a great example of people willing to help ya.

Great job! As I was out boating all weekend I never got a chance to check in on this again ;) after reading your explanation of your preperation I figured you'd do pretty good, as you have alot more of that sense stuff than some people lol.

Dont beat yourself up over the loading issues...It's a learning curve, no matter whos out there if they give you a look or have something less than helpful to say, sorry for their miserable life and inability to accept their not perfect and that they once had those same problems.

Isn't it funny how after reading iboats and all the stupid human tricks people do that even your first second or third trip at most to the ramp, you start getting frustrated with people that cant manage simple staging lanes, courtesey, etc? lol.

Don't worry about the loading issue. You will get the hang of it in a trip or two. I have seen folks who have been boating for years have problems. Especially if they just got a new boat. Each boat hull design requires a slightly different approach to loading. It takes a few tries to figure out the best depth, angle, approach etc.

You are to be commended if your sole problem on your first outing was retreiving. That is by far the most difficult aspect to get used to. Every boat/trailer combo is different. I've had the most success by positioning the trailer so the forward bunks are just sticking out of the water by maybe 12-18". The idea is that you'll drive the boat into the bunks and have the bow end up right where you want it to be with little or no cranking. Easier said than done. It takes practice for sure. You haven't really been indoctrinated until you wind up on your arse walking down the slippery ramp ...lol

Re: First boat outing this Saturday....need some loading tips?

I have to say coming in last night it was a real tight squeeze getting the boat on the trailer. Somebody was trying to pull a boat on a rope right across my lane as I was approaching my trailer. They stopped, but it distracted me and the trailer they were pulling to was almost touching mine and there was a guy all the way out in the water at the back end of his trailer. I was not sure what to do.

I was there first as far as backing down the ramp and when I saw the person pulling the boat through the water look at me and stop I decided to just keep going. Well I hit the trailer off center and the boat initially went a little sideways. My wife even shook her head and and waived me back off. Just as she did that the boat hit the bunks just right and straightened itself right out and came up to about 2-3 feet from the bow stop. That's what I was saying in an earlier post it takes practice to get to where you know exactly how deep to put your trailer in the water.

Thanks for all of the encouragement. I am going to try to go out agian this weekend and I think I've managed to convince my wife to keep the kids at home this time so that I can go out with an experienced boater and see if I can learn anything.
