Prop hits trim tab?

While running about 4000 RPM's I heard an almost grinding sound. Upon exam my trim tab was gone (it was replaced recently), my prop was bent on the edges, and my prop shaft has a slight bend to it. Is it possible the trim tab did this. The motor did not kick up and no damage to skeg or nose cone. Thanks, Bob

My trim tab on my 2003 175 HPDI also came off recently but did not damage the prop. I don't like the design of how Yamaha attaches the tab on this engine! I ordered another one but I am concerned it will come off again! What Loctite version should I use? Does the trim tab even make that much difference?

Re: Prop hits trim tab?

It helps counter the steering torque and it is a sacrificial anode, so I'd say it's pretty darn important. I'm going to remove mine today and put some Medium Hold Loctite on that bolt, like Rodbolt suggested, seems like a darn good idea.

i would think the prop is much lower than your trim tab would be. the trim tab practically travels on water and prop is below... not sure what boat you have.

also i wolukd think the trim tabs are located on the edges of the boat where prop clearance wouldnt be an issue

Yes, I am going to add loctite. However, I now need to find out where it needs to be positioned first before adding. Is there a waterproof version of Loctite? Also, if it pulls to the right move to the right?

Re: Prop hits trim tab?

only design different from the yamaha to my etec to most the rest is if the bolt comes in from the top or the bottom.
any come loose if improperly torqued thats why I either wipe the threads with gel seal or the blue liquid.
gel seal works well and I always have some about.
if it pulls right move the tab right.
with hydraulic steering leave it straight.
its second function on most all motors is for prop hub cooling so it really needs to be there.

Highline CBR, maybe you're thinking of the 2 adjustable trim tabs that some boats have that are mounted on either side, bottom of the transom. The one here is the fin type zinc anode that is bolted to the underside of the cavitation plate. When they get loose and drop down, then they would hit the prop, thus the Loctite idea. I did mine yesterday...good idea!

Thanks Rodbolt! I have hydraulic steering so I will go ahead and set it strait. Is this gel seal a Loctite product?
