I heard the correct size (cranking amps?) battery has to be used or damage to electrical components (power pack, coil, etc?) can happen.

I've a 1995 Evinrude 115 HP (60 degree, carb, V4 block). I don't have the owners manual but, need to buy a battery this weekend.

I am hoping one of the OMC guys could offer an answer. What is the minimum size battery for this engine?

Thanks

I never look at the minimum CCA or MCA for a boat, I get the largest and most powerful battery that will fit in the space allowed. I have a 1998 90hp, basically the same motor as yours, if I get chance in the next little bit I'll go check the manual for the actual size recommended.

The minimum is 465 MCAs or 360 CCAs

This would be a small battery, go bigger.

Thanks Ondarvr!

I will definately go bigger. I was planning to go much bigger than the min size reccomended so I should be good to go. I want to make sure not get something that is too small.

Let's clear something up really quick for people, so long as the battery you get meets the minimum needed CCA for your application then you will be ok. I am saying this based on the assumption that you will be using a battery of the proper voltage for your system, for discussion we will use the standard 12volt........

If your manual says that you should use a 500cca battery then you can use a 500 or anything higher as long as it is the same voltage, you don't have to worry about the extra amperage harming anything. Amperage cannot be forced into your electrical system, as the system will only take what it needs and no more.

If you use a battery rated below what is recommended then you may have an issue even cranking the motor.

Voltage is a different animal and can be forced into a system and cause extensive damage.

Bigger battery / more than minimum CCA is good for 2 reasons I can think of:

1) When it's really cold out, CCA drops off; good to have a cushion.
2) If your OB charging system takes a crap out there, you might still have enough juice to start and get back in.
