Progressive Oil Leak in Bilge

I have a 1991 Sea Ray, completely repowered (V6 Mercruiser) in 2003 by the previous owner. This is my fourth summer running it. I saw a small oil sheen in the bilge last year, which my mechanic wasn't too worried about.

The beginning of this season went fine, and then a few weeks ago, about 1/4 to 1/2 pint of oil leaked into the bilge. I couln't see much with a mirror, but the bottom of the oil pan was wet. I tried some stop leak and it seemed to work for the first day.

Today, it leaked so much that the oil barely registered on the dipstick. My mechanic is thinking it's from the rear main gasket and the engine will have to be pulled.

Does this seem to make sense that so much would leak so fast from the gasket, and that the problem would get worse that fast? Any thoughts on what else to check first - that may be accessible with the engine in? Thanks.

it's called the rear main seal, not gasket

it can leak a half a quart a minute if it is really bad

There are lots of things at the back of an engine that can leak -BT dr. got em

Thanks for the replies. I am pulling the boat out of the water this weekend and will pull the engine for the mechanic to get at it. We'll check each of the items suggested.

it would be better to diagnose properly and do any other maintenance to drive etc if pulling block.may only be loose bolts, which is an easy fix.
