88' Evinrude 25HP-- I had the throttle at full power going forward and the boat just started to slow not much of a change from the engine just no spinning of the prop what could be the problem internally? the prop still spinns if I turn it but the engine is not turning it any more.

Re: Prop stopped spinning while at full power?

my grandfather just had that problem last season we where out in the middle of the lake when it happened lets just say we had quite the sunburn anyway there is a rubber o ring in the prop and it is designed to shred if you hit anything as to not ruin the prop well after many years they rot and shred anyway. pull off the prop and see if there is any shredded rubber of a broken ring. this is if you have the newer style of prop. it dose not hert to check it though:)

Welcome to iboats.

Most, not all props have a rubber hub. This can get loose and let the prop spin fee.
Pull off the prop and see if the hub falls out or is loose, a prop shop can test the hub and replace if needed.
As a quick fix, switch the prop and try it again. That will tell you for sure if its a prop or lower unit issue.

I suppose something major could have failed but tpically a prop can be rehubbed
for much less than a prop costs.

I took the prop off and there was no rubber peices sitting in the gear box. what would be the next step after that?

- also are you talking about the thrust bushing cause i think that was in good shap

- If it is somthing else is that going fixable with out a mechanic?

On mine there was no shredded rubber, the hub is bad. It cost me 75 to rehubbed my prop on 140 Evinrude.

Re: Prop stopped spinning while at full power?

A properly equipped shop will press out the old hub and press in a new one. Takes a pretty hefty ram, the right blocks, and the knowledge of how to properly accomplish the task ... ;)

I have a similar problem. I proved the "spun hub" by making a mark on the propeller that lines up with the cotter pin. Since the inner hub is meshed to the prop shaft splines, if the prop slips, the mark will no longer line up. This might help in your troubleshooting.

Re: Prop stopped spinning while at full power?

If that is the case would it be best to get just a new prop hub or to get a hole new assembly, i have been looking on line for what every one has been talking about and i see it is available in both forms?

If the hub is spun, and it sounds like it is, you can take it to any marine shop and tell them you need it rehubbed. Assuming they don't have the equipment in house they'll send it off and have it back to you in a week unless you're somewhere like Alaska. The cost should be substantially less than a new prop, probably in the $50-$75 range depending on where you are. This is not something you can repair yourself. That said, it's never a bad idea to have a spare prop, so depending on the condition of the one you have and your finances it might not be a bad idea to get a new prop and have that one rehubbed for a spare.

Re: Prop stopped spinning while at full power?

Before you even take off the prop put the boat in gear WITH THE ENGINE OFF and hold the blades of the prop and try to turn them, while looking at the inside of the prop. if you see the inside of the prop stay still and the blades turn its definitely the prop hub. U dont always see pieces of rubber. if u are not able to move anything then u need to get the prop checked, its the easiest check. if the blades and the center turn then switch the gear that the boat is in, forward to reverse.(If u dont know the drive direction of the prop and it turns in one direction turn it the other way and see if u get the same result.) if every thing still spins center nut and outer blades, in both directions and in both gears, then u have a problem somewhere in your drive unit.
if the prop is off u can just push it on and do these tests no need to put the nut on.
Let us know what u discover.

No Fuss :D

Re: Prop stopped spinning while at full power?

So First I did the HUB test by marking it, then I noticed the water intake was not working when I started the boat, I now think it is some thing in the shaft that spins the prop because it free spins when I put it in gear. any advised befor I start taking it apart?

Moving to the JohnnyRude forum, I agree, this does not sound like a Prop issue now . . . Good luck!

Sounds like a broken or stripped driveshaft

Agree with broken d/s. Would explain why no water output.
