volvo penta 5.7 overheating then shutting off

i know i will get flamed for being a noob, but im only 19 years old and this is my first boat. i was wondering if the volvo's have a safty feature where they shut off when they get hot, it reaches about 225 and then shuts off and wont start again for awhile. i just ran it in the yard with the muffs and pulled off the large radiator hose on the top while it was running and no water was coming out. where is the impeller located on this thing, i have no manual and its sunday so i cant run out and get one. any help would be greatly apriciated. im shure most of you know whats going on.

Your raw water impeller is most likely on the front of your harmonic balancer. You don't give much info on your motor, year, model...
