Picked up a 1972 18HP Fastwin 18202R over the weekend, have a somewhat expensive component I need to replace before I can try to fire her up... the shorting switch. Part # 0379638

Would the shorting switch be a
NO (normally open) or NC (normally closed) switch? Normally open, right?

I'm not wild about using non-OEM components, but I may have to so I can do some testing. I can get a cheap push button switch for $1 so I can test...

Also, what is this part here (see pic), I can't seem to be able to find it on the parts breakdown anywhere...

the stop switch is normally open.
I have no idea what the other part is.

To test it, tape off the wires (but not to each other or the block) and use the choke to turn it off.

Mystery part is the recoil starter lockout. Prevents you from pulling the rope when throttle is set to "fast". Looks like it is slightly mangled.

So it's not supposed to spin freely?

Did I overlook it on the parts breakdown?

I should have a manual shortly, hopefully it will be in there.

The lock-out is the brass thing under the flywheel.

If you are referring to the item circled, it is a device that is supposed to prevent a renaway engine or governor. Don't know the technical term.

The shorting switch connects the 2 wires together, whichare leads comming from the points. They show up on eBay from time to time.

While you're in there check out part #49 in the diagram. The last 3 engines I've worked on needed new ones. These are nylon and those engines 2 of them had both tangs broken off and the other had one broken off.

Also in your other thread I though you said that thing was a dirty mess! Must have done some cleaning huh?

there is a metal cam behind the throttle governor that engages that lock-out switch, which locks the recoil. There aren't any safety switches on a manual start, so that is the next best solution

Now that I have had the parts pointed out... and have an explanation of how they interact... I think I can get it back right or at least figure out what needs replacing.

This motor is also missing the thermostat...what is it with that - taking it out and leaving it out? (Is it a saltwater thing?)

(Yes - I've been cleaning... under the cowling wasn't so bad...)

Re: Shorting switch / unidentified part - 18HP Fastwin

Instead of posting a new thread I'll just post here...

Stopped by my parts guy today to pick a few things... he suggested that before I sink any (more) money in the motor to drop the lower and have a look at the drive shaft to see if it was worn thin where it passes through the seal/ bearing to the gearcase.

I've spent all afternoon fighting out the two screws in the exhaust housing cover plate so I can disconnect the upper/lower shift rod... I finally removed them only to find the bolts on the shift rod connector completely rusted. I've got some deep creep soaking in. :(

Re: Shorting switch / unidentified part - 18HP Fastwin

Well, it only took 2 days but I got the lower dropped. 2 screws and 7 bolts...

The drive shaft looks OK to me but what do I know? :D

Take a look and tell me what you think.

(I may be able to get a few more hours out of the water pump, lol.... btw - what is that "exhaust housing spacer" on the top of the pump housing, is it supposed to be there or up in the exhaust housing?)

updated - 18HP Fastwin - driveshaft

Is this driveshaft going to be ok... or do I have a parts motor?

See last post for pic.

Re: updated - 18HP Fastwin - driveshaft

what's wrong with the driveshaft?

the spacer is supposed to seal the driveshaft and upper end of the impeller housing from the exhaust/water, or so i think

The extension can come out with the pump or stay in the housing, doesn,t matter, make sure the o-rings are good and reinstall it.
Replace the water pump, get the complete kit, not just the impeller.
Polish the seal area of the drive shaft with fine emroy cloth before you install it.
