I was driving along at about 35 MPH when I heard a weird humming noise coming from the engine compartment. I pulled the throttle back slowly and noticed the humming stopped along with the engine. I tried to start it and the engine barely turned over. I switched batteries and it did the same thing. A friend towed me in. We got it back to the boat launch and it started and ran fine but after a minute or two it sounded like a grinding noise was coming from the engine. I checked the engine oil and it was good. Had good oil pressure on the gauge and the boat water temp was normal. Also pulled the impeller out and it looked good. Pulled the boat out of the water and checked the outdrive oil on my Volvo DPS. There wasn't a drop on the dipstick. Could low gear oil be the cause of this?

After it cools down it is apparently still working. Do you think filling it with fluid is worth a shot?

Thats like giving a Zombie a blood transfusion. You said you found it dry, all the bearings and races are shot, should it completely lock up again it could break the crankshaft,or the outdrive case itself.

if it was dry and all the bearings are screwed it will sound like a bag of spanners when you turn it

if not and it didn't run totally dry then for the price of the oil - and the chance of avoiding a rebuild - definitely :D

first sign of temp up, or clattering sounds or even rpm drop - then turn it off and rebuild.

or do things the proper way and just rebuild - depends on how deep your pockets are :D - mine are shallow - so i would have to try giving the zombie a transfusion before ordering a new fishing buddy - :D:D

(not that i would ever kill my fishing buddy you understand - lol)
good luck
