I have a 2007 9.8 Nisson NSF9.8a four stroke pull start ,runs like a dream..I want to install it as a kicker on a toon and,, I believe,, it is set up internally for remote control.. there are plug in ports on the front of the motor that are covered up that look like where the remote gear should plug in.. Is that an option? how tough is it to rig and where can I get a control box? It could also serve as a trolling motor as well as a backup, If converting this is too much of a hasstle should I trade it in for one thats set up.. Advice much appreciated

Re: installing electric start nissan9.8

I assume you have a 9.8A2 or A3. The precise model and serial are important for this upgrade. There are actually 2 conversions here. One is for an RC box, and the other is for electric start. In may cases, if considering both conversions, it is more economical to buy a motor that is already the correct model.

For electric start... If you have the flywheel with the ring gear already on it, that saves a lot of cost and hassle with starter installation. If not, you will need the full electric start kit, including flywheel and alternator.

For RC... You need the SRC kit, throttle/shift control cables about $30.00 each), and RC box.

See the parts catalog at to determine exactly what you already have, and what you would need to do the conversion.

You likely need:
3V2763000M ELECTRIC START KIT, 8/9.8A2,A3 (F TYPE) $712.65 and
3V2838801M R.C. FITTING ASSY F8A2/9.8A2 031096XD~ $102.58 and

depending on whether you want key start,
3B7Q843601 RC BOX, RC5D (MFS5B/6B,8/9.8A3), AMB-W/O ELECT START $300.30 or
3B7Q843503 RC BOX, RC5C (MFS8A3/9.8A3), AMB w/ elec start $371.28

New MSRP would be well over $2K for the EP (remote) model. More if you need 25" shaft, and also more if you need power tilt. Then you would need to either trade-in your old motor, or sell it to someone who wants rope start. If costs are the biggest issue, you can look for a used EP.
