I have a 98' Johnson 90HP. I have tacken to the same mechanic 3 times in the past 3 months to clean the carb. I have drained the tank clean, replaced the fuel line with coast guard approved lines, installed fuel/water filter and now im having to take it back to him. After he cleans the carb it runs beautiful. It sets up a week or 2 then right back to not running/idleing. Im going broke here at $350 a pop to clean/rebuild the carb and all maintenance. Ive done all he has told me to do... Any response would be greatly appriciated.

1) Are you sure he's rebuilding the carbs every time and not just taking them off and spraying carb cleaner in them...I don't see a point in paying to get them rebuilt 3 times in 3 months. Theres obviously an underlying problem that's causing them to not act right after being used for a week like you said. He needs to look for the cause of the issue and not just fix the symptoms you know what I mean? If he can't find the problem, I would suggest taking to another guy to get a second opinion.

2) Are you sure your gas/oil mix is correct? and just making sure you probably have but you haven't used the same gas each time running it have you? If so it might be as simple as bad gas.

No, im not sure he is rebulding the carbs. After all that ive done im thinking the problem lies between the fuel connection on the motor and the carbs. After this last episode, i drained the filter and fuel looked good... no particals.

Yes i am properly mixing the fuel.. and the fuel is from different stations.

Could something in the carbs be deteriorating??? or maybe fuel lines in the motor itself?

If he's charging you the same rate each time, then you're paying for brand new gaskets, floats, valve needles & seats...those things just don't wear out that fast, and they should not be affected by ethanol blended gasoline, as long as it's not much over 10% ethanol.

The guy you're taking it to must have a kid in college or something, he's just taking your money and not helping you at all.

Describe your symptoms. Be specific.
Post the compression numbers (your mechanic should have done compression test and written the results on your invoice, if he didn't, call and ask).

Has he rebuilt all 4 carbs? If he is doing one at a time, I'd find a new mechanic.

Re: Fuel/Carburetor issues? Need Help!!!

are you asking the mechanic to rebuild your carbs???

or are you specifically asking the mechanic to solve the problem?

two different things?

if you are taking to him to diagnose and he says you need to rebuild the carbs, and you pay him for that,...if it dont fix the problem....some of it has to be on him...

he shouldnt be charging you to rebuild carbs ANY MORE...now if he needs to fix something else...then it is on you...

it is beyond me that you would accept him saying

" i need to re- rebuild the carbs i rebuilt before...but you have to pay me again"...

TWICE!!!!!

Is your oil tank mounted higher than the motor?
