New engine, timing question

Hey all. Earlier this year I installed a remanned 5.7L(Non-Vortec) engine in my 21" Sylvan bow rider. Also upgraded to an Edelbrock intake & 4 bbl Edelbrock carb.

The boat runs fabulously. Nice and smooth, and has given many hours of fun times this summer.

My question is, when we installed this engine we never timed it. Just got it to the point where it sounded good and ran ok. The new timing chain cover does not have any timing marks in it, so we never messed with it.

What's the process involved with timing this thing? I have a feeling it may be off a touch, as the boat isn't as powerful as I think it should be. Seems to take longer than it should to get on plane, GPS says 48 MPH, etc.

What ignition do you have? Just about all (except T5) should be set to 8 degrees BTDC at idle, and about 32 degrees at wot.

I assume you have the composite timing cover given your comments. If so, the timing marks should be on the harmonic balancer. If not, you will need to verify TDC and use a timing tape to put your own marks on it.

There is a timing mark on the balancer. I've never timed a damn thing in my life, so I'm leaving it up to a friend who has. I do have a nifty snapon digital timing light that was expensive, and never been used.

It is not hard. Watch your friend and you will be able to check it each spring as you get ready for the season.
