Running my 1994 - 140 Johnson Seahorse yesterday and at low idle the engine cut out suddenly. Whan I tried to re-start there was no crancking of engine at all. I dropped anchor and after about 20 minutes of fiddling I decided to try a pull start approach as all I got when i turned key was a single click, no cranck what-so-ever. She started right up but I was unable to shut off with ignition key and had to resort to pulling the plug cap.

Three hours later the engine was too cool to pull start and I had to get a tow home. Mechanic thinks it maty be a solenoid but would that be related to not being able to shut off with ignition key?

Re: Is it a solenoid?

check your harness connections for being tite and no corrosion. Its also possible your keyswitch has gone bad,you should check to see you get 12 volts at the yellow.red striped wire at the solonoid turning the key to the start position,if yes, check for good grounds. What stumps me is the switch not shutting eng.down, but a sudden shut down could be the switch also

I would start at the key switch as well. Also as a secondary issue you may have blown your 20 amp fuse at the starter, cant hurt to have a look see.
