Re: Cap removal

Hard to tell, but on my little Skeeter (and most other bass boats) the splashwell is glued to the transom. I had to take a chisel and break the glue/putty.
This is a picture of the backside of my splashwell. There was about as much putty left on the transom.

Re: Cap removal

Most boats use bedding compound of some type to fill in any gaps there may be between the transom and the cap to avoid any stress cracks in the fiberglass once the motor is installed.

You can cut it with a sawzall or one of the vibrating saws everyone has for sale for prices from 39 bucks at Harbor freight up to a couple hundred from the original Fein product.

Once you've gotten the majority of the bond cut, then from the inside, use a jack and some supporting wood to displace the pressure and slowly jack up the splashwell. You don't want to put so much pressure that you end up damaging the cap, but you want enough pressure that when you get back in to cut and chisel out the rest of the bond, it will eventually "pop" free.

I think that depends on the boat. On my tracker I actually did it from both sides. I used a sawzall, a hammer and chisel, and an air chisel to loosen the putty from inside. When that didn't work I actually ended up cutting down at an angle from outside the boat. I put the sawzall in the seam between the cap and the hull and aimed it down at an angle into the underdeck area. I was planning a transom rebuild anyway so destroying the transom was not an issue for me. Here is a pic of what it looked like after. In the first pic you can see the fuzz from the cutting of the sawzall. The hull and cap are separated in the pics. In the end, the sawzall part probably took 20 minutes and all the time I spent messing around underneath was not necessary.

Re: Cap removal

hello all

Ok I went today and looked real good at it.There is glue all around where u see the red in the pic.It is like a foam stuff I tried to chisel it but its some tough stuff.Only way I see to do it is to cut the black in the other pic.but I don't know if I can fix something like that was trying to stay away from anything u can see.It looks like its 2 pieces but i don't see how unless the inside part is part of the transom and cap.

Sean.

Re: Cap removal

My best guess is that the inside of that splashwell that butts up against the transom wood is just part of the cap....it's simply a well engineered boat where everything fits like a glove.
