Electric Start sticks on Flywheel

Hello -

My 1978 Evinrude V6 Crossflow 175hp engine has trouble starting every now and then. This is not due to the engine but the electric start jams up the flywheel. This has become quite a hastle. I have read other posts about lubing up the shaft that the starter rides up which I have done but it still manages to get stuck. Could this be due to a faulty spring to push the starter back down?

Thanks,

Breilly

MAke sure the starter isn't slightly loose, watch when you crank for any movement.
Sometimes, if the engine is slightly flooded , if it pops, it will kick the bendix down again without starting, but your is sticking up.
Is the gear in decent condition? no snags on it?

Thanks for the response.

The gear is in pretty descent condition I can't find any snags on it. I also have went back and tightened all the bolts that hold the starter on but none were loose.

Thoughts?

Did you clean the splines...in case they are gummed up....

also there is a bushing/bearing on the top plate of the starter...if its worn it can cause the shaft to **** a bit when engaged....and it may cause the bendix to stay engaged....

.see if you have play in the shaft by wiggling the top retaining nut...if no real play....clean splines again...use deep creep ...or electronic cleaner..dont drench it..just a spray and work the bendix up by hand...then oil it with a lite oil like 3-1 oil....no wd-40 as it gums in time

I have checked the splines they are clean as can be. This starter does not look that old. There is also no play in the shaft. I did as you suggested and lubed it up with a 3-1 oil and tried to start it and it got stuck again. Just can't seem to get it working. Also when it sticks it jams the spring up into the stop washer and bends the crap out of it. I have thought about putting a larger spring on it?

Thoughts...

If the engine is otherwise decent, I would rebuild or replace the starter.
No sense buggerin up the flywheel too for a couple hundred dollars.
