I just got my first boat...its a 96 mirage jet boat with a 120 xr sport jet s/n 0E185531. It seems to run fine, and all seems well, but I was told that I should have it tuned up and the water pump replaced, it pumps water fine from what I can see when I attach water hose. I am a car guy but not a boat guy so I am familiar with part function just not boat motor maint. or function....is this the correct advice to follow? What do they do for a tune up and is there a standard cost for this? What else should I pay attention to with this boat? How can I tell if a mechanic is trying to take the newbie for an expensive ride?

Really appreciate any and all good advice!

I don't know squat about jet boats, but I do know that the term "tuneup" has no universal meaning, so be sure when you ask for one you get a list of exactly what will be done.
At least that way you can compare quotes from one shop to another.

Tune ups is very general termanology nowadays. The water pump he might be talking about isn't the raw water pump but the jet pump. My '96 jet ski has never had either one done yet. No, I did replace the plugs, once.

you know use mokanixs. we have a license to steal :).
however your engine uses the water from the jet impeller for cooling. the liner to impeller clearence needs to be checked/adjusted occasionally and the stator oil needs occasional changes.
not hard nor very time comsuming.
