My friend just got a 1967 glastron with a 4 cylinder gm inboard motor and a johnson outdrive. The engine only has 300 hours on and he started it up for the first time 2 weeks ago and it ran great at first...i wasnt there so im not sure what happened next. Somehow the motor was not trim-ed all the way down and the gears werent locked in and when they hit the throttle the drive gears that turn the propeller grinded and were stripped down..... i have a picture of the gears. Does anyone know where i can find these spider gears....i believe they are the drive gears....

can anyone tell me what these gears are called??

we did get the boat to run succesfully once after this problem but the gears slip out from being grinded down too bad...
Im by no means a boat expert and know verry little....

Thanks for any help,
J

You have what is called a "stringer"" outdrive made by OMC , the parts in the pic
are called the "ball gears".

Thank you for the reply! Are these hard to find, and most importantly is it difficult to remove the old ones and put the new ones on?

yours are the press on kind. no nut.
your drive must be off an old Johnson Surfer or something mid 60's -OMC used to put Johnson and Evinrude on some of their units
OMC= Outboard Marine Corporation
Not sure you can get those ball gears anymore. You'll either have to be really patient with searching for used stuff, which you can sometimes find dirt cheap (or ridiculously expensive e.g. ebay) if someone is junking an old boat.
Unfortunately, there's a couple dozen guys who restore the old OMC boats and grab up those parts.

I might buy 2 or 3 spools of mig wire and get welding them round again

Those ball gears, like MANY other parts for those early stinger mounts have been out of production for a million years. Good luck with that one.

before i got my current boat someone gave me a 69 evinrude sportsman with stringer drive i checked on a outdrive and it was like 3000.00 so without even thinking on parting it out i gave it away . there is plenty of junk boats with parts out there just keep looking locally and get a whole boat and trailer for the price you will pay for just the gears. i gave it away to a friend but if somebody woul have offered me 300.00 bucks for everything it would have been sold.
