Hi, I just purchase a new smokercraft tracer and I'm getting ready to mount my 48 special on the back and I have a few questions. I have look at a few motor installation and there seems to be a little vairiance as to up and down placement. Some motors are mounted high off the top of the transom by an inch or so, while other are flat on the top of the transom. Is there a reason for this? why would you not rest the bottom of the transom clamp on the top of the transom before drilling holes? Am I being silly? Any input would be grealtly appreciated....Robert

Mount it so the cavatation plate is about 1" above the lowest point of the transom ;)

There are others more qualified to answer this but what you should be looking at is where your prop anti-cavitation plate is in realtion to the keel.
IF I rememeber correctly your stating point should be to have that anti-cavitation plate 1" or less below the keel.
Then match drill your holes but don't drill the highest or lowest hole.
You need to be able to adjust up and down after test driving if needed.

I mis-spoke. Starting point should be with the anti-cavitation 1" above keel.
Not below.

Align motor so it is positioned as described above.
Drill holes so that the motor can be moved up or down an inch if needed for performance issues.

Seal your holes with 3M 4200. Don't want to rot that brand new transom!
