starts hard cold, sounds like staving for fuel, primer bulb will not get real hard or stay hard. after warm up everything is fine. Just bought boat new to outboards. any help much appreciated. checked out hoses and clamps today both on fuel tank and then on motor. no obvious leaks .

Welcome to iboats.

What is your cold starting procedure step by step?

have only started the boat 3 times. I think that you are on to my problem of starting procedure. I prime bulb push key in and turn to start. try only for ten seconds or less repeat. engine usually coughs and quits. after about four or five times it will start no other problems after that. starts up great after warm up. appreaciate your response. Everybody says the primer bulb must be and stay hard.

Hold the key in for 5 or 7 seconds (in the "on" position) before turning it over to "start".

Your motor might or might not have a feature called "fast start", which automatically increases the idle speed until the motor reaches a predetermined temperature. If it does have that feature and it's working properly, it'll be idling very high for a few minutes when cold then drop down to normal.

If it doesn't have "fast start", or if it's not working as described, lift the hi-idle lever full up for cold starts, then back it down after it starts, to just enough RPMs to keep it running, until its warm. If it starts to die, punching the key for just a second usually keeps it running.

Primer bulb needs to get firm -- not tennis ball hard, more like raquetball hard. While the motor's running, the bulb is just a fat spot in the fuel hose...you'll feel a little pressure, but it won't be firm at all. When the motor stops, it should still be pretty hard, maybe less than when you started but not by much.

Try what was mentioned and let us know how it goes. There is a good thread in the FAQ about cold starting an outboard that you should read.

Short of that, you may need to investigate that your choke is operating as it should for cold starts. Let us know if you need help with this.
