Need pics or diagram of shifter/throttle linkage setup on 1984 Mercruiser 140 inline 4 cylinder on the motor. Service manuals are less than helpful.
Thanks in advance

Re: 140 HP Mercruiser shifter/throttle linkage

KC8LED,

I've got the 86 model of the same boat, same power package. I have some pics of the area in question, I'll see what I can dig up.

What are you looking for specifically?

Re: 140 HP Mercruiser shifter/throttle linkage

Hi Paul,

Just need to make sure that I've got the shiftr late and throttle linkages where they belong. Anything you can provide would be helpful. I had to put a short block in and didn't take any pics of where things went. Mostly all together now with the exception of the port side of the motor. My email is hawkeye1@ameritech.net. Thanks for your help in advance.

Re: 140 HP Mercruiser shifter/throttle linkage

Lee,

May sound like a dumb questions, but is your linkage on top of the valve cover or on the side of the manifold?

Reason I ask, I replaced the engine in my SeaRay, which has the linkage on top, and the donor had the linkage on the side.

Will be going through the pics I have, and if nothing shows what you need, will have the friends who are using the boat currently take some pics.

Sorry this is taking some time, been out of town and just getting back in and settled down.

Re: 140 HP Mercruiser shifter/throttle linkage

Hi Paul,

Linkages are on the side of the manifold. No problem with the time as I'm not putting this in the water until I get it right. Thanks.

Re: 140 HP Mercruiser shifter/throttle linkage

OK, pics aren't going to be as helpful as I had hoped, as my current setup has the shift mechanism on top.

There is a sticky in the Adults section that describes how the shift interrupt works, that might shed some light.

If I were in your position, here's what it'd do.
You've got three cables to worry about: throttle, which is self explanatory, shift cable to the helm, and lower shift cable to the drive. So, the question is, which side of the v-shaped shift interrupt mechanism does each of the two shift cables go to. If memory serves, and that's iffy sometimes, one of the two shift cable will have an adjusting barrel on it, which will only go in one place. The terminating location of that cable should then be obvious. That leave only one place for the other cable.

Summary: Unless better info come along, hook it up and shift at the helm. See if the prop lock in the proper direction, and ratchets in the other. Do it both in forward and reverse. As long as you don't "gorilla" anything, I don't think you can hurt anything. I am heading to my office today, and will take a look at the side mounted donor engine there and take some pics that may or may not help.

Sorry I'm not being more definitively helpful! Perhaps someone more knowledgeable will speak up and clarify/correct my ramblings.

Best of luck!
Paul
