I have an older Minn Kota trolling motor i just really cheap. Its an autopilot with foot control, no remote. The problem is that when i plug it in directly to the battery i only get side to side movement, and no thrust. Is this the foot control switch going bad or the board in the head? It has a white top that says "autopilot and the base reads 48# thrust and has a switch for autopilot on and off. I did notice that if i hit the pedal the blade turns just a few degrees. If i continuously hit it i can get it to make a full turn. Any help would be great.

Do you have a good deep cycle battery and is it fully charged? If so, there are lots of things it could be which is why you got it really cheap. Check all connections at the battery, at the receptacle, and at the plug. Foot controls go bad, control boards go bad, and motors go bad all for various reasons.

Yes, all the basic stuff covered. The battery is fully charged. The trolloing motor is connected directly to the battery with positive conections. It is not in a boat.

The foot control moves the motor side to side but not the prop. There is power getting the foot conrtol and the prop moves if i hit the footpedal constantly. If i cross both wires going to the speed circuit and hit the thrust button should the prop move at full speed? If it does then is it the foot conrtol? Can i put power directly the motor and see if the prop spins?

Remove the cover at the top of the shaft. Disconnect the wires going to the motor and try a direct connection.
