30 hp johnson waterpump question

Our waterpump only runs while giving the motor gas, if at idle it will not run. Any suggestions?

probably 9 yrs ago, not sure. We bought the boat and when we tried running it the other week, my husband was running the motor and it sounded like one cylinder was running, and then the motor overheated. Now got motor running, and waterpump will only pump when give it gas.

water pump is most likely shot..done...so it wont pump at lower RPM's..with faster RPM it may push some water.....I would not run it till you replace the pump...or you will burn it up....

Also the more you run it the more apt you are to have pieces break off and get lodged in the engine...9 years is a old pump...especialy when you see the signs of it not working right....

If a motor gets hot & goes into slow mode I think ( not sure) it does cutout one cylinder. My 1989 25hp sounded like it was running on one cylinder when I had a bad pump.
