I have an OMC 3.0 motor that won't crank. I am not getting a spark. I have replaced the ignition coil, checked the distributer which looks to be fine. The motor is turning over really hard it just will not fire... Any ideas?
thanks

Just for definition purposes...cranking does mean turning over.

How are your points?
Voltage at the coil?

have you checked the carb to see if it is sqirting fuel when you move the throttle ... and i wouldnt just assume the points and condensor are good ... you could pull the number one plug and or use a spare plug and hook the number one plug wire to it ... ground the outer case of the plug wire to engine block and check for spark when turning it over .... good luck .. oh ps also check to see if there is a lanyard kill switch on the dash and make sure it is properly engaged

make sure its a good white spark that jumps 1/4 inch - if its a red/orange weak spark check points gap and swap condensor

if the points gap is far too big it won't have time to charge the coil for a good spark

if the gap is correct then the condensor isn't assisting in e/m charge collapse.

the reason i add this is a spark plug will spark with hardly any volts in atmosphere conditions (ie when earthed to block in open air) but that doesn't mean its sparking when in the cylinder under compression

and try running a jumper directly from the battery +ve to the coil +ve

if it sparks now then you have a problem with the positive supply to the +ve coil terminal - check ignition wiring - lanyard switch & ignition switch

also try disconnecting all wires from the -ve side of the coil except the one from the points - could be tacho shorting

good luck

Re: HELP. Old OMC 3L 4cylinder will not fire

Well right after we got it started we crused around for a while making sure everything was working properly. Everything seemed ok... then the oil preasure dropped flat and the temp. shot straight up... we looked checked the dip stick and it was basicaly bone dry... We couldn't see any oil actually dripping or any residue where it may have come from... we put more oil in and idled to see if we could find the leak... we could see more oil in the water but it wasn't leaking bad still could not see where it was coming from... so we road around is circles and the smae thing happenend we checked the oil and it was empty... I think there may be some bad seals which i will try to find in the manual whemi get a chance.
thanks

Rusted oil pan maybe.....
Running it dry on oil like that you will be buying a new engine very soon.

Clean the bilge and engine real good then get a mirror and a bright light.
You will find it.
Could be oil pan, timing cover or front or rear seal, oil sending unit or several other places.
