What boat is right for us

Hey all, long time lurker first time poster...

Heres the question, a friend and i bought a cheap craigslist boat as our first floater, a small 17ft bowrider, 70hp force (i know i know) runs perfectly after a fuel pump and carb rebuild. however, we routinely are out with both of us, his wife and small child. We keep the boat on a resevoir, but enjoy heading down the ct river from east haddam to the mouth.

As I am sure you can imagine, this is a tremendous challenge is a small boat with weekend traffic on the river. And far from what I consider completely safe.

We bought this boat to get on the water as we figured it was cheap and it would help us to figure out exactly what we wanted out of a serious purchase.

Here is what we do in no particular order, though all are important functions though not specific items to tailor a purchase towards.

Ski, wakeboard, tube
Fish, freshwater and some long island sound
we would like to be able to go to block island in good weather
Hanging out....whether anchoring up, rafting or whatever, we need some capacity for people, 8 would be good
Heading down the river (deep wakes with weekend traffic) to the sound and some near shore ocean usage (heading to napatree point etc)

Our dream boat from a perspective of having gone and explored a new one, though way to expensive, would be an 18 ft boston whaler dauntless, maybe 20ft if the deal was right.

Now in its current (2010) config, it is about perfect, center console loads of room, plenty of power, seating and capacity. Its a safe boat of course and will handle all we want to do without a problem.

These boat are only in our price range in early 2000's (we would like to keep it well under 20k if possible).

I am not adverse to finding another model/brand that will work well, and advice of owners is the best way to get an idea of ride, ability to handle chop and inclement weather, carry people and do all of the things that we want to do well but not perfect (dont need a wakeboard boat specifically kind of thing its just for fun)

Any other brands or models to look at, the bw outrage maybe? Mako's? etc. I am not adverse to a winter project to the extent of reconfiguring for seating etc.

Any help, links, advice will be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks

Seth

so?!?!?!?!? A 10 year old Whaler or the like is just broken in (if cared for properly)! Yeah. there are cheaper brands for sure, but one of the benefits of buying used - 10+ years - is you CAN often afford just what you want.

I'm not saying BW is the best choice for you, but I AM saying don't be afraid of a 10-15 year old well-cared-for boat...especially one that was built very solid to start5 with!

Darn, I like that boat, btw.

Re: What boat is right for us

I have been seeing some really nice older Grady White boats around here lately for really cheap. I never see Boston Whalers cheap though. Even junk goes for top dollar around here. The debate goes on as to whether they are any better than anything else out there, but they demand top dollar. NOW whether they are selling them or not, that is a differant story, I dont call because I think they are nuts asking so much for them. My family always had Grady White back in the 70s and I wanna say 60s, but I wasnt alive in the 60s to prove that. They make a great boat, that I think rivals Boston Whaler. I grew up in South Jersey and they were all over the place up there. We moved to Florida in 84 and a GW was very rare, but lately I have been seeing them a lot around here. There is even a GW dealer close by.

Might be something to look at.

Completely agree, while the BW's are gorgeous and all, an 18' CC for 56k sticker with a bimini as the one "extra" is a bit silly imho...

TMH: I am def not afraid of a ten year old boat, just wondering if something similar can be had for half the price when considering it wont have the BW tax added on to it. Or if the dauntless is even the right boat for us. problem is the 2010 is perfect, but it has been restyled and changed and we are having a hard time locating one close enough (of an early enough vintage) to go check out.

Basically, the ultimate sport/fish center console is .....(insert wisdom here)

and yeah, the dauntless 200 is just amazing, 18 is only slightly less so (no head)

I am gonna watch this thread. Although I like the GW, I am open to other options too. My brother in law has a Mako that is very nice. Of course now it just sits in the yard, and has for the last 10 years.

Agree with mako as well, it seems that BW has the market "cornered" on the CC sport/fish as far as innovative creature comforts go (but again, thats the new new model). My buddy and buying partner seems to be stuck on the BW while I think that a similar hull design can be had for considerably less, allowing extra to customize seating, t-top, electronics etc.
