Hi, I'm in the process of refitting a new to me Chris Craft Commander 315 1989 sport fishing boat. The hull and top sides are in great shape, interior good (minor stuff like carpet, curtains) I have the engines pulled for replacement and I'm going thru the fuel system. The boat has twin 150 gal tanks, the metal straps that held them from moving, the wood supports are rotten. I lifted the tanks(empty) about 1 inch to survey the supports, they are in bad shape. The fiber-glassed stringers in the hull are fine. What type of wood do I use to hold the tanks? The original had 1/2 plywood (original as it was same color as hull) about 4 inch wide with a wooden 2x2 screwed around the perimeter to keep it from side to side.

Is there a better type of "wood" to use, the bilges are dry, the tanks sit about 6-8 from the hull and water. Can pressure treat wood be used? or should something else? I'm hoping to be able to use something easily found, not some exotic hardwood.

The cockpit floor also had vertical braces, they seemed to be regular 2x4 material, they too were painted like the hull, so I can't be sure if the boat was repaired many years ago and they took the time to paint and match, or the factory just use simple lumber yard materials.

Thanks

Can you use Starboard instead of wood ??. This way it will never rot again. :)

Starboard can indeed be used in place of wood. I would make the uprights (I think that's the configuration you are describing) out of double-thickness 3/4" starboard...

Starboard is not a structual material. It's dimensionally unstable and it's structural properties are minimal at best.

If you want it done right, use a marine plywood like greenwood Xl and glass it in. The repair will outlast you.

Well, that being said, most of the supports/platforms/mounting boards in any Stamas should be removed...I built my Air Conditioning board for the 32 and 34 out of 3 pieces of 3/4" starboard...
