I need to lift a 1994 Cobra 5.0 to put in new freeze plugs. What will I need to disconnect besides the motor mounts to lift the motor?

I am not removing the engine, just lifting it to put in new plugs.

Thanks.

Is this on a car or a boat?

Boat. Taking the outdrive off right now following the OMC manual directions. But it is stuck. I removed the six outdrive bolts and the the pivot rod holding the trim lifts but it won't budge. What am I missing.

also, Do the exhaust hoses need to be loosened to lift the engine up 1 foot?

Yes exhaust hoses need to come off. Drive shaft could be seized to coupler, when was the drive last off. And why are you replacing freeze plugs. If motor was not properly winterized I would make sure block is not shot before doing anything. Those casting plugs typically do not just pop out for no reason. And no they are not designed to save the motor if it freezes with water in the block. Hate to see you spend a bunch of time and money on parts only to discover that the block is shot internally due to freeze damage. I have seen people tie the drive to a big ol tree and yank the boat with a truck to get the drive off. May need to resort to that if all else fails.

Re: Motor Lift 1994 Cobra 5.0 Question

Superpop,

thanks for your input. I am guessing the drive has never been off before. I ended up getting some wood shims to help move the drive out and that worked as I bumped the drive against a 2x4 on the ground.

Question. How can I tell if the block is shot without starting it up? There are no visible signs of distress on the block other than the plugs.

Thanks.
