Blower fan direction

It just occured to me I was going to ask this sometime ago.

My blower fan in the engine compartment is connected to the out going vent side, but the fan is set so it pulls air in. This cant be right.
Under way air is drawn in by the vent facing forward and out by the vent facing aft.
Why is the fan drawing air from the aft facing vent and pushing it in the engine bay.
It has been like this for some years as there is no sogn that it has been changed for some time if ever.

The wires could have been switched anywhere in the circuit or the blower could simply be mounted backwards...I'd disconnect the hoses, give the blower a 180, and put the hoses back on.

It is called a blower but it needs to be hooked up so is sucks air from the bottom of the bilge. You?ve got something backwards.

It is an electric motor...swap the two wires and it will run in the opposite direction!

Re: Blower fan direction

Reversing the direction of motor rotation is bad advice since the blower wheel itself is directional -- it cannot move air properly if the motor is spinning it in the wrong direction. Remove the hoses, fire up the blower and see which is the outlet. That's where the outlet hose goes. the other end of that hose goes to the rear facing vent.

The fan is wired correctly, and blowing the direction that the arrow is pointing on the motor.

So it is as I suspected, mine is backwards. I will have to change that around so whe blows out.
And yes, im going to change the fan not just swap wires.

Would it be easier to simply turn both hull vents around so they point the correct way with what you've already got??
Maybe they were switched by accident during a previous rebuild.....

Very simple. Blower exhausts fumes, thus must be oriented correctly. Intake hose, via engine, brings in fresh air...

Turn the bleepin' blower around!!!

Sorry, family site, can't suggest cussing here...

The arrow points in the direction of the airflow. If it's pointing towards the bilge it's mounted backwards. Disconnect the hoses, flip the blower, reconnect the hoses.

Yea, thats a though too. I had plans of taking them out to paint them anyway as they are a bit shabby.

Sometimes the simplest soulutions are the best.
Im as simple as you get, cant belive I didnt think of that. :D

Uncalled for...for so many reasons.

First: having the motor running in the correct direction...even with the squirrel cage backwards...is infinitly safer than having the motor forcing bilge fumes back into the engine bay.

Second: the previous owner on my older boat had hooked the bilge fan wires backwards, and it was doing the same as the original poster's. All that I had to do was wire it correctly. This could easily have been his solution....

Your reaction to my post was rude...if you need to show your personality in the future, use the PM feature.

Happy boating!

Why ??. That wasn't good advice to give.!!. You don't go switching around wire for a easy fix.

Say he did do it and his boat blew-up then what ??.

I told like it was as if we were at the dock or marina !!. :)

I don?t understand how this would help. You?d still be pushing air into the engine compartment instead of pulling fumes out.

Pushing fresh air into the engine compartment isn't necessarily a bad idea as long as the exhaust from the compartment is equal to or greater than the supply. The purpose of the exhaust blower is to EXHAUST fumes out of the engine compartment.

The thing about reversing the wires is exactly what Silvertip stated. The blades are set to move air one direction. If it's a propeller type fan then it may in fact change air flow direction. If it's a squirrel cage fan then it will still move air in the designed direction but at reduced capacity.

No need to fake an apology on my behalf.

I use Nutri-Sweet (except for my Cajun spaghetti sauce)...and I am pretty sure that I was weaned on formula.

Try rereading this: "First: having the motor running in the correct direction...even with the squirrel cage backwards...is infinitly safer than having the motor forcing bilge fumes back into the engine bay." If you cannot comprehend this fact...or are logic challanged...then I just can't help you.

You have the bedside manner of Dr. Kevorkian.

Happy boating!
