125 Force.. got a question for you guys

Had issues with the engine bogging on and off about 3000 RPM's, and when I took the cover off back at the dock I noticed water inside up to the waterline while it was sitting down in the water.

Today I pulled the rear cover off the motor tower and see this seal that appears to be in place to stop water from gettin in there. Am I right to assume that it is there to keep water out?

Snapped a picture today with the cover off to show the seal (red arrow pointing to it) and where the water was in there (blue line).

While idling at the dock I noticed bubbles in the water that was in there, possibly exhaust gettin in there and choking the engine under high rpm's?
What could leak exhaust into that area... any ideas?

Thanks!

You'll never keep the water out completly.Bubbles are from exhaust.Shouls be no problem.
Run the boat with out the cowling.See if it breaks down then.
The rubber boot you see if not aligned right will allow exhaust to leak into the housing and choke the motor.
Bogging: Plugs burning right?Compression OK?
Ethanol is messing up a lot of motors. It's delaminating the inside of older hoses causing clogs in the carbs and fuel filter.Check for soft hoses and junk in the filter on the motor.Check the diaphram.
Do these checks then post your results.J J

Compression is 140-145 across the 4 cylinders after a decarbing this spring, The "Power Flow" boot doesnt leak, that was new this spring too. The filter, (I'd call it a strainer), had a little bit of crud on it, not enough to starve the engine. Tomorrow I plan on taking it out to see how it runs on a 3 gallon plastic tank, try to eliminate that part at least.

It has been great the past 2 years I have owned it besides a impeller, then all of a sudden it started this. It gets only premium gas with semi syn oil and the blue Stabil for the past 2 years.

The boat is a '87 Trophy 1910, jumps onto plane and runs great untill it gets just above 3000 rpm then it get the occasional bog while at 3/4 or more throttle. We made a 10+ mile run at 34-36 mph the day before it started acting up, so the bogging came as a bit of a suprise. It is deffinately a lack of air or fuel issue just by the way it acts. I'll check the diaphram and plugs before I take it out tomorrow and post up what I see.

Thanks,
Josh

That gasket is there mainly for noise reduction. It was never designed to seal out water and never will. There is a groove in the midleg where the shift rod rides and the gasket does not seal this. So, when the engine is sitting, it will be common for water to be inside the shroud. This will have no effect on engine performance. The bubbles are probably exhaust that is exiting the snout correctly working its way around the seal. There is nothing in that portion of the leg to leak exhaust.

If she runs fine for a while then starts to sag and lose performance it is more likely fuel than ignition.

Replace the pump diaphragm on general principles. Check the primer bulb for sticking check-valves. If you have a quick-connect fuel fitting, check for junk behind the spring inside the male fitting. check for kinks in the fuel line, and lastly check the tank and internal strainer if it has one.

One more the vent line can have bugs laying eggs in the line.Causing it to block the air.
I just found a mud dauber or small wasp that had clogged the pee line on my neighbors outboard. It had about 15-20 little casings in it.They had been working in this hose for a while before it finnaly clogged the hose.J

TSR..any luck with finding the leak? I just replaced my kingpin and now have a major exhaust leak coming from this area. Also noticed water to the same level you marked and thought that was the problem.. wasnt sure if it was normal or not. Was told kingpin was hollow and to seal it with some caulk.

It is my understanding that water is supposed to fill up into the lower cowling area to a few inches below the exhaust relief. There are a number of small drainage holes in there that allows any fuel or oil that drips out from the carbs to flush out correct?

Fills to level of water you're sitting in. Drain holes are at the anti ventilation/cavitation plate.
