Help with control replacement

I have a 2001 Glastron SX 175 w/ 3.0L Volvo Penta GSM-A engine and a Volvo SX-M outdirve. I have had it for 3 years now, and have had issues with the controller since I bought it. At random times, the neutral button gets stuck in, and I can't get the drive into gear. I took it apart last year, and found the spring that pushes the neutral button back out. It had good tension, and the area around it wasn't gummed up or anything....all looked normal to me. However, the button still gets stuck in (always at the worst time - never in my driveway on muffs, or at the dock). If I jiggle the handle enough, eventually the button pops back out, and I can move forward. I can't think of anything else to try with this button....again, all looks normal, and it works most of the time - but I can't depend on being able to get the boat in gear.

I have a trim switch, and kill switch on my current controller (a Volvo Penta controller, by the way)

So...I would like to research control replacement options. I *think* that any 2 cable controller with trim and kill switch would work, right?

I see several Volvo controllers on the Volvo Penta store website that say they are for SX-M engines. Is anyone familar with any of the recent Volvo controller models?

From the Volvo website, I am looking at
model 3888319 (Xact) for $289
model 3860578 for $168
model 3885621 for $240
or model 3885624 for $199

Anyone have or hear anything about any of the above? Not sure if I want to get something similar to my current controller, or up-grade?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Re: Help with control replacement

Howdy,

I pulled mine when I repowered the boat.

I installed a Teleflex CH1700 shown below..... It's outstanding and will work with any I/O or outboard etc.

"Everyone" sells them.

regards,

Rick

What you have to look at is the amount of throw for each control arm and the direction. I am not that familiar with the Volvo control you have. They may be of specific throw and direction that may or may not be the same. I know that just about ALL after market controls are set up for OMC, MC and Volvo. The direction of throw is changeable and there are 3 set of holes to accommodate different amounts of shift travel.

If are the same I see no reason why it shouldn't work as far as the mechanicals go. The electrical you can probably find out by comparing wiring diagrams; I believe available in the Adult Stickys at the top of the forum page.

Re: Help with control replacement

Thanks for the info. Saw the Teleflex controller on iBoats...it is on-sale for $220.

I wanted to ask too...can anyone think of an easy way to figure out the model # for my current controller? My boat is on the water - about an hour away, and I didn't think to look for a model # before I left it last.

Attached is the best picture I have of it, if that helps any.

Thanks again for any info!

Bump. Still hoping to find someone with a more up-to-date Volvo controller...

Not sure what you are looking for, the Teleflex CH1700 IS the most up to date unit.
PS: Teleflex makes the controls for Volvo. Volvo does not make it's own.

Re: Help with control replacement

to me... thats alot of coin for one malfunctioning button.
are you ok with the current controller other than the button getting stuck?
I have a QS 3000 ( 96' ) that had the same prob... i pulled it and fixed it. Sanded down the moving parts, lubed it... no probs since.

Yea...I may end up trying that again. I have already taken it apart several times, and convinced myself that I did something to fix it. ..when I get done being mad at it, I may end up giving it another chance. Although, I am leaning toward replacing it today...
