Hello there, I just bought a 1987 150 Evinrude VRO, It starts fine, idles great. When I'm not pulling a skier and slowly advance the power there is no problem with the motor, however when i "Hit It" the engine boggs down and has a 2-3 sec delay before really increasing any power. Then It slowly speeds up and has no problems.

Just installed 6 new plugs, and gapped them to .30, and used a fuel additive.

Like I said when I'm not pulling someone, it runs great, just the initial dragging to full power is the problem!

HELP

Thanks

Re: Bogging Down Out of the Hole

Ok! I'll do that,

Quick question, do you want to disable the power pack to do this test? And does the engine have to be hot?

I have a 1987 150hp Evinrude VRO

Also a low compression means what exactly? I'll have to rebuild the cylinder?

Thanks for your reply...

Yeah, best to disable spark for compression test. Pulling the emergency lanyard will do.

Low compression means you pull the cylinder head for visual inspection. With luck, all it needs is a head gasket. Usually is not too difficult to spot. Also, means making sure it doesn't happen again. Rebuild the carbs, water pump, make sure its getting plenty oil, etc.

When you say "used a fuel additive", if you mean added it to existing gasoline, there is no additive that can make good gas out of bad gas, so if you for any reason suspect bad gas just drain the tank & replace it. Also, you can't clean carburetors with fuel additive.

Were it mine, I'd rebuild the carbs & water pump anyway, just on general principle (unless I personally knew & trusted the seller).

Keep in mind that what you might be experiencing here is merely an underpowered boat (the reason for the sale), and not a malfunction at all.
