charging question on pullstart Nissan

Hello, I have a 2002 Nissan NSF25A pull start motor. The manual and Nissan said that I would be able to charge the battery even though the motor is not an electric start motor. The rec/reg red output (fused) wire is only putting out 4v on meter though at idle. The engine has low hours and has always run great. I'm assuming the CDI needs 12V to operate also and that's working fine. Any ideas as to why I only get 4V out of the rec/reg? And is nissan wrong in saying this motor should still charge the battery even though it is non-electric start? Thanks.

I think you need a rectifier to charge the battery, comes standard on electric engines, ask Nissan for correct parts.

Thanks for the reply. It has a rectifier on it. The rectifier part number for the pull start and electric start is the same.

Sorry, can't advise as the engines I usually work with are Tohatsu M-25C3 which are newer updates, asuming 25 A models are older models.

New pull models does not comes with a rectifier, only found on electric models, will need to buy as a rectifier kit.

Whip out your Factory service manual (available at any dealer, including me), and diagnose the alternator/rectifier circuit with your analog VOM. A bad diode in the rectifier could cause that problem, as could an alternator coil problem.

That model engine did not come with a rectfier from the factory so...You need a factory service manual to determine if the rectifier that someone put on it is correct and if it is, what the values are to test it.
