Hi everone
i have an 1987 85 hp force outboard w/low compression on 2 and 3 cylinders. I have a chance to buy an 85 mercury, year unknown, do i have to change control cables?? It is a 15'-5" 1987 vip bass boat.
How would i know where and how to get cables if needed?? Will it just attach to fow and rev controller on side of boat.
(new boater) one more question, would i have to change tilt/trim motor also???? Very confused
thanks in advance

Re: Motor change

could be as simple as a blown head gasket seeing you have two low cyl's together. At this point I would pull the head, a very easy task, if none of the bolts are seized, and inspect the cyl. walls for any damage. If none is plainly visible, install a new head gasket and check the compression again. If you do decide to change motors, send me a pm, depending on where you are located, I would be interested in the old engine.

Re: Motor change

Pull the water jacket cover off and you can rotate the engine and inspect the pistons. I got a new block and the cylinders looked fine from the head view just a tiny bit of scoring but some of the pistons were scored very deeply and had some stuck rings also and I discovered this by removing the water jacket cover and inspecting. Don't judge just by what the cylinders look like with the head off. You can also move the piston side to side with the cover off and tell if the rings are stuck or not. If you really want to you can take the port covers off the other side and inspect the other side of the pistons. If you do decide to get that other engine block make sure you do a compression test on it.

Re: Motor change

Jkoppe I have 2 powerheads both are not working. I live in Washington. I need one to fix and put on before next summer. I was planning to use one for a go kart. I've been thinking about the cooling mods but if you're near and want it get back at me.

Re: Motor change

If you're looking at the engine from the back...it's on the left side and it has a bunch of bolts

The fuel pump mounts on one of these port covers. There's 3 of them on the driver side you can't miss em.
