I have a 20hp merc , approx a 91 and it will cough (like a cold) puff out a shot of smoke bog for second then resume running normal then repeats....any ideas would be very helpful...thank you
If you are going to remove the carb rebuild them. why go thru all that and not rebuild it. plus the pump. Like 50 bucks.
although what you describe is usually a timeming problem.
Also make sure your tank and lines to the motor are free of water.
Sounds like it's running a bit lean. As Latin Monkey said, take off carb and clean. Set idle mixture screw to 1 1/4 turns out and see what happens from there.
thanks to all who replied..I pulled the carb again , its like new so I cleaned it anyways again , also found that it was too lean and had to back out a bit to get it where I wanted....now I want to get it on the water so I can make sure that was the problem for sure. Thank you all for the advice , hope my next run is a success. If not I will work on the timing
