1957 18hp Evinrude Fast Twin....

I need to do the lower unit seals on this motor...problem is i can't find the kit for that year.

iboats has kits starting with 1958. i am hoping some one here can tell me if the lower units from 57 & 58 are the same or similar enough for the 58 seal kit to work on my 57.

I don't know where i can find OEM part numbers to compare the model years.

The lower units changed in 1958 to the smaller, (weaker) lower profile 4 bolt lower units.

The lower units from 1955-1957 were beefier, and had an extra (5th) bolt in the rear.

Those seal kits are available through Sierra as far as I know, and the individual parts (spagetti seal, prop and drive shaft seals, shift rod o-ring and fill level/drain plug seals should be available separately (if not as a kit) from BRP.

Thanks. The problem i mentioned about not being able to find OEM part numbers to compare the years, is because the BRP online parts catalog only goes back to 1968.

I am still new to this game, so i am only aware of that one source for OEM part numbers.

I'll look around online some more, if i don't find anything, there is an excellent marine store that will be able to get it for me...it just that it's very much out of my way to get to, and they are on the expensive side.

EDIT: searching these forums more, i found the parts list for my motor, so at least i have OEM numbers now! If anyone has other recomended online parts sources, please let me know

Your information was a bit hasty too. It was the 10hp that went to the 4-bolt case in 1958, not the 18hp,

But there were some seal size changes somewhere back in that era.

F-R you are absolutely correct.
and sorry Nevandy, I misspoke, and I stand corrected.

I have put my foot in my mouth so to speak twice on here today.
I certainly SHOULD have said 1958 10hp, as I just finished restoring one (pix enclosed) which is what I was thinking of on the bearcase change.

I hastily applied that change to the 18hp as well although now that I think about it, I am not sure the 18hp ever did get the smaller lower unit.
At least the link i provided is correct, and the folks at Sea way should be able to fix him up based on the year and hp he provides.

FYI: Sea-Way was able to hook me up with the parts i needed. Haven't gotten around to doing the lower unit yet, but i feel better having found and bought the parts.

You can get a replacement seal kit for that year fron Stone ansd Sons marine in Houston Texas.. Excellent source for OMC and Evinrude vintage parts.
