Does Size really Matter?

Ok, here's something that I personally just don't understand the reasoning. I'm an avid boater with a bunch of toys. One being my 24' pontoon boat. Unfortunately it's drafts to deep for some of my favorite party/fishing spots.

With that said I just picked up a 12' pontoon boat with a 10hp outboard. The max I get out of this puppy is about 8-10 mph. In speaking with nearby dealer, I explained the boat is rated for a max O/B of 35hp. He replied that with the boat being a pontoon and so short that I would not see much difference in speed between a 10p vs. 30 hp outboard?

My larger boat originally had a 60 big foot. Upgraded to a 90 and gained a lot of speed. Am I missing something here with the smaller size? or am I being fed a line?

Exactly... I was kinda surprised because I know they had at least 3 used 20-30hp he could have offered up. Seeing he didn't, I thought there might be some validity to his response.

WOW, a dealer that doesn't want to sell you something bigger.

That dealer must have been having a bad day. I imagine you will see an increase in speed if you jump up 20 hp. You wont break any speed records but you should gain a few MPH out of the old girl. I have seen some people haulin on pontoon boats, actually saw one pulling a wakeboarder. However when it comes to pontoon boats, i feel its better to buy a bigger cooler than a bigger engine and better to spend money on ice than gas.
