Beefer's engine is breaking up at WOT

Ummmm.....

Same problem here. I was/am getting ready to have the carb rebuilt, but now after seeing that you have changed the carb, not sure if that's the path I need to go down. I've changed all my filters (at fuel pump, carb, and the fuel/water separator), changed plugs, cap, rotor, points, and condenser, and have completely removed all the E10 fuel and refilled with fresh non-ethanol. My problem also doesn't happen until the boat has been run for some time.

Maybe between the 3 of us (me, you and dalenoman2005), we can figure it out through deductive reasoning.

The other thing(s) I was thinking could be the culprit are fuel pump and/or coil. Fuel pump doesn't make a whole lot of sense though, as you would think the problem would be a) at all speeds and b) at all times. Coil I've heard can make an engine behave like there is a fuel delivery problem when it is starting to go out, but don't really know about that.

What about vapor lock? That's something that's been in the back of my mind on this, but I don't know how to identify it, or how to solve it, and what would be causing it.

Don't give up!

Re: Engine breaking up at high RPM. Only after running for a long time

Yes, it could be your coil. Had the same symtoms with my first bad coil. When it starts to break up, grab the coil and see how hot it is. To hot to handle isn't good.

For real? I'm so glad someone confirmed what I thought. So I should go run the boat (can be there in 10 minutes), run it until it starts having the problem, and then see how hot the coil is? I'm completely serious in my question; how long should I be able to 'grab' onto it? I'm trying to get an idea of how hot will be too hot. A $35 coil is a whole lot better then a $300 carb rebuild. The admiral would actually be happy about that.

Would you suggest I buy the coil, run the boat with the old until the problem starts, then change it on the water, and see if it continues? Just a thought.

Well, I just got in from a test run. I went out on the old coil, and sure enough, when we got into the Gulf, she died. Checked the coil, and it was too hot to handle, so I changed it out with the new one. Nope. Not the problem. Wouldn't restart (and stay running) until she cooled down. She's not overheating, running 165F deg. I think my next option is my carb, unless there are more ideas....

The mods might check in here as I just realized I'm talking to two boats. Beefer, yours would start after it cuts out but die immediately? Or under a load? Better yet Beefer, start a new thread, because you haven't gone through all the replacement parts yet so your problem could be different. The carb shouldn't be affected by heat, but still could be the problem. Christoner2002 has replaced his carb. Not that that makes it right. How many volts to the + side of the coil are you getting while running? How many volts when it's dead? Should have 12v during key crank time, >9v while running. To many volts to the coil will burn it up. Time for me to play baseball. I'll be back in the morning.

Moved the above to a new thread.

OK, I agree. It is becoming a mess . . . We need to always try and keep one core problem from one user per thread in the technical sections. Even when there are simialr symptoms etc. In that case we should cross reference, but parts of proper troubleshooting are done with blinders on. Assuming two situations are the same is a recipe for disaster.

sure you know but it should be less than 9v when running NOT more

Understood.

I was wondering where my last post went on the other one... :D

Ok, so I've gotten a little confused too. :)

I replaced the old coil after she died, and still had the problem, which leads me to believe it wasn't coil related. :( My problem seems to be happening only when she's been running. The temp is in the normal range (145-165), so it's not an overheat issue. A buddy of mine thinks it's the carb, that the choke spring isn't working when the engine gets warmed up, or that the float(s) is sticking when they get warm.

Once it dies, it's a bear to get it to restart and stay running. If I wait for the engine to cool down, it starts like nothing happened, and will continue on with the day.

This may or may not be a mere coincidence, but it *seems* to occur in rougher water, but that may be because of the amount of time it takes to get to that rougher water.

I had this trouble too!
I found the trash... Black paint, black plasic coating??? what ever, it was stuck in the float bowl needle set in side the carb. (holley 2bbl) OMC 5.0 Ford.
Clean it out, that baby fires up hot, cold what ever!:D
I had this troulbe while up grading to the pentronix ignition.
Hope this helps!:)

Are you saying >9 means more than 9? Its been a while since the classroom. If so, it was ment to mean less than 9 volts.

When it dies, go back and pump the throttle and see if it squirts fuel in the primaries. What is the voltage at the coil? This should help determine if it is fuel or ignition related. After you figure that out, go to the Adults Only section at the beginning and follow the charts.

Will do. I may not get back on it until Monday or Tuesday, but as soon as I can, I'll let you know how it goes.
