1979 Sea Ray with rebuilt 5.7L Mercruiser and factory rebuilt Alpha 1 outdrive runs at normal temp at idle and low speed operation. When put under a real load, the temp moves to the red range and water accumulates in the bilge. After backing down to moving at slow speed, the temp slowly moves back into the normal range. Back in the driveway using the muffs on the outdrive, I can't locate any water entering the bilge. Any ideas?

Check your hydraulic cooler. You might have a crack and at high pressure i.e when moving at higher speed it may crack bigger and dump more water.

did you check to see if you have all your drain plugs in on engine and manifolds
look for a missing core plug
inspect all hoses and clamps for cooling system

Yes, you really need to find where water is coming in.

Have someone else drive while you look for the water intrusion.
