Yesterday I pushed the key in,turned it to the right and the starter cranked but the engine died after the key returned to its neutral position.I restarted it several times but the engine would only run with the primer selenoid engaged. I noticed a drip of gas coming from the carburator. Is that the area where my problem exists? Thanks for the help. The engine is used every week and never had carburator work.

Re: 1989 88 spl

ever week for 21 years and still on the original carbs? man, talk about reliability!

The primer solenoid floods the motor with gasoline, which it needs for a cold start, but otherwise makes the mixture too rich to burn (not enough air). The fact that your motor runs with the primer engaged can only mean one thing: gas is not getting from the carbs into the engine.

Either way, a carb rebuild with new kits is in order. Don't be intimidated, these carbs are remarkably simple devices, you can do it.

Order your kits (one per carb) and a service manual (highly recommend the factory manual). See the "top secret file" at the top of this forum, follow the link to "carb cleaning and rebuilding".

Keep us posted.

This engine amazes me,considering it has run in salt water all of its life. It's the first time I've ever had a fuel problem. I'll start with a carb kit. Thanks for the reply.
