18' SS floor rod locker questions

In planning my floor rod locker, roughly what is the minimum length opening I need to easily get most rods in-and-out? (30", 36", etc.). I have a good plan for the inside of the locker using pieces of PVC pipe to slide the rods into, lining it with alum flashing and carpet. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get a hatch door for this or how to go about making one that is strong enough to be constantly walked on by heavy people like myself (275lbs)?

i plan on putting one in my 18 ss, i`m going to make it out of 1/2 ply and put a couple of layers of fiberglass on the door

Star, experiment with your rods. I'm not sure what lengths your rods are but 36" should be more than enough. Some guys have found the locker storage doors on E-Bay or C List or check around in any local boat junk yards. Good Luck

yep ... ebay is where i just bought mine. he wanted 60 + 20 to ship and i watched it get relisted a couple times so i offered 50 shipped and he took it. it should be here monday. its the teak lid with the aluminum frame.

Check out Bob_VT's thread, he made a huge rod locker built into the bow casting platform. Plenty of room under the raised deck. That is one option.

I kept my original open layout and bought a teak ski locker with aluminum frame for $30 on ebay. Just wait for a deal to pop up.

Thanks for all the replies. I wanted to put mine in the main floor in place of the old ski locker and reserve the rest of the space in the raised bow platform for other things.

I currently have that on order from GLS.

I saw another photo of a rod locker in a late model Starcraft (SuperFisherman, I think it was) on e-bay and saved the photo. This is what I am trying to duplicate and I think I ordered the exact same thing.
