How much does an outdrive weigh?

I may have to remove the outdrive lower unit from my mercruiser 165 Alpha and I plan to build a stand to support it but it would help if I knew approximately how much it weighs. I was thinking of using a furniture mover's dolly as a base so I could move it to a corner of the shop - does that seem reasonable?

I think I had looked up that the Alpha was about 85 pounds. I removed mine just this week and also built a stand that sat on top of a furniture dolly. Worked excellent and held it with no problems as the dolly is rated for a LOT more than that. If your stand will not be ajustable, I recommend positioning your drive and trailer so you can get the right measurements in the beginning. To put the drive all the way down on mine, I had to drop the tongue's crank as low as it would go (which worked fine).

Bit less actually. I weighed my A1 Gen 2 and it was 75lbs

Building a stand is a good idea, yes. And those weights for Alphas are accurate. But remember, a Bravo 3 weighs about 153lbs, so build your stand to hold it. That way when you upgrade boats/drives, you don't have to build a new stand.
Or you could check bims racing products or maybe right here on iboats for metal stands with wheels/casters.

It's not pretty but works well, dolly is wide enough for 2 drives, I have a spare on it now and emtpy spot for the drive on the boat. Prop has to be off to slide on it.

Here's a shot of mine that I quickly put together. It's a two-piece that slipped around the drive and then attached. It allowed me to keep the prop on and put the drive on the stand at the height it was coming off the boat, so there was no lifting.

I came up with an ingenious concept this weekend while worker on my outdrive's lower unit.

Cost $5

Got to Walmart and buy on of those large clear Rubbermaid storage bins (if you don't already have one). Have (2) 2.5'x2"x4" ready and on hand.

Fill it half way with water. Don't take the prop of the lower unit, detach the lower unit and have someone help if you can.

Remove it from the upper unit and carry it over to the bucket you have filled with water, and gently rest it in the water in the tub. While holding it up grab the 2x4's and slide on on each side.

Plenty strong!

Done....

couldn't believe how well this worked...and when you're done you can use the bucket (filled all the way with water) to test the impeller.
