I have a 6hp johnson around 1970s. The gear shift to make it go from neutral to forward and reverse broke off. How can i fix it? i guess a pin broke or something. It seems like i have to take a lot apart to fix it?

you might need to take the power head off to access the connection from the shift lever to the shift rod. shouldn't be to hard to find a used shift lever and it's fairly easy to do the exchange.

What is your model number, will tell what year it is.
You may want to look at a parts breakdown to determine what part broke.

You will have to pull the powerhead to rmove the stub of the old handle and install a new/used one. There is no other way to get at the interior end of the handle shaft, which protrudes into the cavity on the top end of the midsection.
