Hi guys ,
I have a 2001 4stoke 75hp merc while at the lake the shifter would not shift motor in to gear. I took the shifter out it was good ( while setting on pontoon log) disconnected the cable at the motor shifter and cable was good. I had to shift motor in fwd gear and leave the cable off the motor to get back to camper

Sounds like something in motor is binding any ideas ? Only had this motor a week:rolleyes:

And should the pee stream ( from water pump) have much pressure or just dribble out . It is a full stream not drops. thanks

Did something break loose on the shift mechanism? Did it ever work properly?

The pee stream (tell tail) should be a strong stream not a dribble. I thought the old impeller looked ok when I replaced it. I was relieved when I saw the stream intensity about doubled.

If you can shift the motor by hand and it works, I'd suspect the shift control box. See if something may have slipped off inside.

I had the shifter out took it apart and it seems to work fine and it will move the shifting cable in and out like its suppose to when not hooked up to the motor.

The shifter is a gen II (4500 i think) console mount that is less than a year old and the cable were replaced at the same time.

Very odd that your motor shifts by hand, the cable works fine, but together theres a problem. IMHO if you put it back together and it feels like its binding there are a couple of things to look for. Is the cable run where there are no 'hard' turns? Is the adjustment barrel seated properly? If its binding can you feel at what point it gets tight? it may be something as simple as greasing the slides on the shift mechanism inside the cowling. Take a look at this diagram and see if its your engine. Hope it helps.http://www.boats.net/parts/search/M...TROKE)/1B366823 & Up/Adaptor Plate/parts.html

Well called the boat place i bought motor from because it was suppose to be ready for the water when i got it. They where puzzled that it would shift at motor and the controller and cables worked good ,but it hung when hooked up.

I took everything apart didn't find anything hooked it back up worked fine (in driveway) about the time I was going to call boat place to say it was o.k. it locked up again . They talked like it may be in the lower unit?
