I just bought this motor for $37.50 with the pressure tank at an auction. Having never worked on a boat motor, I was excited when I got it running great for under a hundred bucks in parts. Unfortunately, now that it is running, I checked and have water getting into the lower unit.

Any advice on what I should do next? I see that there are seal kits, but do I need to competely open up the lower unit to do them? Water is not getting in at the screws, so its either the seal under the water pump, at the propeller, or where the upper and lower casings go together. Can I replace those seals without undoing the phillips head screw? I bought a seloc book on this and it is useless when trying to solve this issue. I am just a bit hesitant to open it up completely if I don't have to.

Thanks for any and all help.

Here is a website you can use to look up the explode dview of the lower unit. www.ebscohost.com. username is marshall and password is public. go to the small engine section. not sure what your lower unit entails, but I just replaced the propshat seal and O ring that seal up the lower unit and it completely stopped the water intrusionand was not hard at all.

My advice is if you are going to do any, do them all. It's not hard and you have lotsa folks on this forum that do it regularly for help. I pulled my 20 hp LU apart and replaced the gearset yesterday in under an hour. It's not hard. The only tricky one is the shifter O ring. Once you do it once you wont have to worry about it for awhile.

btw, that's a great price for the engine and tank. Unfortunately you have a really ugly year, the first year of the fibreglass hood and that model is dubbed the breadbox!

I went to that site but cant access anything. Is there a trick to it?

Id be using that Seloc to drain up the gearcase oil in the driveway. Do yourself a favour before rebuilding if it is your first time, go on ebay and get yourself a factory OEM Service Manual.

I doubt he wants to pay more for the manual than he did for the engine and tank. I used to use Seloc's (and still have em) and have had no problem with them. Sure they're general but if you have more than one engine they cant be beat for value. And all the spec tables in the back are very handy. And seeing as I have over 60 pre 1970 engines the cost would be kind of prohibitive.

Some of us are not normal when it comes to collecting outboards, lol ;) But for someone with 1 motor, and no background in rebuilding a gearcase, its hard to compare. In general I agree with ya though.

But it could be his first of many. It sounds like he's got the bug!

And also I have the '58 and '60 E18 parts manuals and the '59 J18 if you want one for reference. The closest would be the '60 E18 probably. If yes, send me a PM with your email and request.

I think I caught something! It's my first one and I'm already looking online for others. It was fun and easy to get running. I think I just instantly became an old outboard motor junkie.

If I am going to open the lower unit up, do I need to take out the phillips screw that holds the yoke in place, or can I just undo the bottom of the lower unit with the lower unit upside down? I don't want to mess with any of the bearings or gears, just replace the seals.

Thanks,
matt

See Chris... He's on his way!

Yes, take the phillips screw out. It's easy to get back in. You will need it out to take the skeg off. Which you need to get off to do all the seals. Do it the first time and you'll never worry about doing it again. Just make sure you have the right goop to seal it back up (3M stuff, I forget the # but it's real sticky!). And maybe some spaghetti seal.

Just in case you guys check this, I did want to let you know that I did finally get around to doing the seals in the lower unit. I went ahead and did them all since it was open. It was much easier than I anticipated. There was really nothing to it.

I just took it out on the water for the first time and it ran excellent and there was no water in the lower unit. Thank you all for the input and guidance.
