no gears when boats running

i have a 88 sea ray sundancer 268 with 7.4l 454merc with bravo one drive..i was cruising along the other day and lost my gear. didnt hit anything (i dont think)..boat still revvs up and runs no problem.. when i put it into gear theres nothing... when boat is off i have forward and reverse the prop locks both ways correctly. anyone have an idea of whats wrong?

I don't know bravos but if you can see the very back of the engine and can see the output shaft that leads back to the drive check to see if it is spinning when the engine is running. If it's not turning with the engine you have a bad coupler. Which stinks because changing it requires engine removal. Can you smell any burning friction stink while it runs? Are there any sounds at all? Do you feel any clunk when moving shift to forward or reverse?

no clunking noise at all.. just revvs up.... shaft still spins so i dont belive the coupler is bad..

Possibly bad shift mechanism/cables.

Might be in your upper gears. Do bravos have a top cap that you can pull off to look?

hey.. update.. its an alpha drive. also i pulled it off and when you spin prop, the yoke should turn at the same time correct? well i cant spin the prop or yoke. any ideas? (crossing fingers its not a gear issue)

Alpha drive behind a big block lasted 22 years ----- not bad.
Might be a good idea to look into a SEI replacement drive.

Its repairable, but with the price of SEI drives its cheaper to replace.

And no A Bravo will absolutely not bolt up to an Alpha...
