1977 OMC Sterndrive not moving when reving up

I have this boat with a OMC motor and stern drive. It goes into drive but when you give it gas the motor revs up but still moving at a idle. Any ideas? It has coils to engage forward and reverse, checked everything works right out of the water the prop spins faster but as soon as you put it in the water nothing. No wierd noises no grinding, the only thing I have not checked or pulled apart is the bell housing.

Sounds like a spun prop to me. Take a Sharpie permanent marker & draw a line across the center of the prop from the outer metal edge of the center across the mounting bolt (or cone in your case). Take it to the lake & try it out. When you pull the boat out, the line should be intact. If it's broken, it means the prop is spinning slower than the prop shaft & you need a new prop.

Did you hit something underwater recently?

Or the forward drive spring is broken or the hub it rides on is worn, and both are no longer available, and not available aftermarket either.

Another possibility is a stripped water pump shaft. (These are still available) When was the last time you changed the impeller? Do you regularly grease the fitting at the front of the drive about 1/2 way up, under the plastic cap?

Pull the prop. Make sure the spleen is in good shape as well as the inside of the prop.

No splines(or spleens the way you call them) on a electric shift OMC.
