Reed Valve? Fuel spitting from carb (PROBLEM SOLVED)

I have a 1996 Force 75. This year has been a trip. Just replaced the head gasket as the #1 cylinder had low compression and water beads on the spark plug. I also replaced the gaskets and cleaned the carb real good. One big problem though is that I am getting a lot of fuel coming out of my carb from what seems to be an overflow hole. I can't get the engine to start unless I am holding the carb shutter, manually, wide open. Once she starts, she runs fine, until I let it idle. Then it stalls. Still lots of gas leaking from carb.

I had read on an earlier thread that this might be a symptom of a stuck, bent, or broken reed valve.

Does anyone have the knowledge here to help me out on this issue?

Thanks for the help!!

fuel spitting from the vent hole in the top of the carb is due to float height being wrong or a bad inlet needle valve. reed valve is in the manifold behind the carb would not have anything to do with your problem.

Gents - thanks for the advice. I did check the float before and after fuel spitting. Right on spec according to my Seloc manual.

How do you check needle seat or diaphragm in fuel pump?

Wish I could post a pic. My file size is too big, no matter what I do.

Any help on the needle seat or fuel pump diaphragm? Looking for help on how to tell if they are defective?

Thank you

Have you tired cleaning out carb? Easy to take off put shifter to forward and allas bolts area easy to access. I sprayed cleaner in every orfice. I checked my reeds with flashlight you can to mine look fine not missing. Mine still stalls at lake every once in awhile. The float if going off parts diagram, line going accross float bigger bottom goes down. I dont think there is way to adjust in any way is there? My needle was staying in up position not falling down. Small amount black gunk on orange rubber tip. Pics of the carb might be good idea.

Remove the carb take that apart. Then make sure there is nothing in the bowl.
Turn it upside down and try to blow through the line. Then turn it over and see if you can still blow through it.
If you can blow through it both ways then the needle/seat is bad.
Be careful what you use to clean the carb. Some soaks will swell any rubber and ruin it.J

Well, she is running and purring like a kitten.

Ordered new fuel pump diaphragm kit, new needle, and new fuel hoses.

This did the trick. Started right up and idled perfect. All previous symptoms have been fixed. Thank you all for your input on this post and related posts over the last two months.

Off to the lake this morning for a water test.

Best,
Mike
