Hi again,
I just bought a used tilt and trim package that should be here in 2 days. I want to install it myself, but the manual I ordered won't be here until after the weekend.
Can anyone give me a step by step idiots guide? Can this be done without taking the engine off of the boat? It looks like I can just remove the bolts on the side, slide the old one out, and replace it, but sometimes things aren't a simple as they seem! (been fooled by that before!)
I would appreciate any tips you folks can give me.
Thanks,
Jim

Also what type of fluid should I use? They use ATF fluid at my marina, is that correct?

You can replace it without taking it completely off the boat, but you will need to take the port side engine mounting bracket loose by taking the big nut off on the tilt tube and the engine mounting bolts on that side out to get the T&T unit out. Will also need to take the pin out where the top of the tilt tube ram is joined to the tilt bracket. Make sure travel tilt lock is holding engine up when doing this. Doesn't hurt to have a board or winch holding the motor up as well.

PS. Didn't say whether you are replacing an existing one or installing for the first time on this motor. If the first time, you are going to need a lot more than just the T&T unit to make it work. I added T&T to my 1978 70HP myself and added the T&T sensor and gauge as well, so I'm fairly familiar with the process.

Thanks Jeff
I am replacing a unit that was shot when I bought the engine. I hadn't noticed the pin, is there any trick to getting it out? I'll take a closer look tomorrow when I pull the boat out of the water.

No particular trick to getting the pin out. As I remember there is a nylon bushing and a kind of circular 'paper clip' like fastener on each end. Been since 2004 since I installed mine, but don't remember it being a big deal. Used stainless steel bolts coated with marine grease when installing the T&T unit on my motor. Steel bolts on the original tilt shock unit were a real pita to get out and this motor was never even in salt water.
