Hey guys,
First of all I want to say thanks for this awesome forum, it has been very helpful to me. I am still stumped on a few things though. I did a search and could not find what I was looking for, so I figured ill just ask the specific question. Here goes.
I was given an older 17ft rinker built, I believe its a 87. This beauty has a massive 1965 Johnson Super Seahorse 75HP model # V4HL-17S. I am in the process of re wiring the motor due to the fact the original wiring was a mess. I am going to get a service manual, but have to wait for a few dollars to flow in. In the meantime maybe some of you boat gurus might have an answer.

This is what i got.
Dont know how to post pics so here is the links.

1. the first pic I need to know what this red wire needs to be hooked to. it runs from here to the wiring harness then out into the hull to be hooked up. I just dont know what its for.

2. the second pic is of a black wire that runs to the distributor box. what is this for and what do I connect it too.

3. is a white or cream or yellow, that also goes to the distributor box. any ideas?

and finally this is a pic of the other end of the wires that are hanging for me to figure out where to hook them to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Any

Re: 1965 johnson 75 HP Wiring help

DJ,

I can help with a few. I have a 1965 Johnson V4AL, which is similar. The red wire going up by the carbs is for the electric choke. You should have a switch on the dash where power comes in, and when you hit the button/switch, it sends current to the choke solenoid, the solenoid should draw down, pulling the choke closed. I am not sure if you have a switch on the dash, or if the keyswitch pushes in as you turn it, but either way should work just fine. Just remember that if you do install a switch yourself, make sure it is a push button that returns right away, or a rocker switch, so you do not leave it on and burn out the choke solenoid.

The white wire to the little switch by the distributor is a cut off switch, so you cannot have the motor throttled up too high in neutral while starting it.

Hope this helps some, and I will see what I can find out on the others.
