i am new to the group and have a question/mystery. my tilt/trim isn't working properly on my 1992 merc 90hp on a smokercraft magnum. Here is the deal:
1. the down doesn't always work (sometimes it does). I replaced the relay and it still intermittently doesn't work.
2. i check the fluid and it is fine.
3. the down doesn't work with both switches (one on the throttle and the one in the front of the boat). If you play around with both switches, then it sometimes "kicks in".
4. If i reverse the battery cables (and press the "up"), then the down works perfectly. but...if i press the "down", then the engine doesn't go up. If the hook up the battery correctly, then the up work properly.

I am out of ideas---anybody have a clue??

Thanks for the reply! I will check that out. Do you know if it is safe just to switch the cables for the tilt/trim? Thanks for the warning!

Sounds like you need to get a voltmeter to check if the solenoid is REALLY getting a 12v signal to engage.
