Alright fellas, I'm going to put your knowledge to use. wish I knew about this place before I bought the other boat. anyways I'm thinking about picking up a different boat. I now have a better idea of what I want a boat to do and what not.
boat I'm thinking of is a 1990 Bayliner Capris. 3.0 merc cruiser inboard, 20 foot open bow. heres a pic of it.
they are wanting 3,000 for it. has a new bilge and seats are showing some cracking. Hasn't been in the water yet this year, of course they say it's ready.
I won't buy it without a test drive so it's going in the water before it comes home. did that once.
around here it's pretty much coming to the end of season. maybe a good month left, after that random days.
what are your thoughts? any specific things to look for. how will the 3.0 do with a 20 foot boat? underpowered?

For my liking its a little under powered..I had a 175 searay open bow with a 3.0, took a bit to get out of the hole..way longer with towing a tube...If there were just 2 of us in the boat, once out of the hole it would average in the lows 30,s mph which was plenty for me.. My opinion is there are plenty of boats out there for sale and with the season coming to an end there will be more for sale..its pretty rare now a days to get nada book prices.. so shop around, its a buyers market rt now.

I had that exact boat in an 18ft. Good power for 18', maybe a little under powered for 20 if you want to ski. Great looking boat. Bayliner is a little lighter in the hull than sea ray, so it won't be as under powered as a boat like that. Seats in a B/L are cheap so don't expect too much from that. The engine is a mercruser so it will last a long time.

Over all 3k for this boat (if it runs good) is a good price. How many hours does she have? If it's a lot, talk them down.

I'm not that familiar with the BayLiner boats, but isn't a 20 foot boat a little much for a single axle trailer? Are BayLiners that light weight?

As for other comments, I agree that a 3.0L will most likely yield performance that will leave you wanting more.

Re: what's she worth (boat)

Given your description, I'm going to say it's probably overpriced.

Details are everything, of course, but my concerns are:

- If it hasn't been used yet this year, what are the chances it's been properly maintained? At the very least, the battery will be shot, I'd anticipate having to do a full fluids change, and so forth just to know it's been done properly.

- All of the usual issues with possible rotting floors, transoms, and stringers.

- How are the shaft boots on the outdrive? Have they ever been changed?

- Interior sonds like it's in fair to poor condition. Major flaw, IMO as upolstry work doesn't come cheap.

- 3.0 engie is adequate and that's about it.

Without knowing hours or maint history, it's impossible to say for sure, but my inclination would be not a cent more than $2k at this time of year and that assumes it floats, starts, and runs well and is solid. If you aren't really confident in your ability to inspect a boat, I'd consider having a mechanic go over it before you buy. And before the Bayliner Boys get all whipped up, that was not a Bayliner Bash, it's just the combination of age and aparent lack of use.

Leave them a number and tell them to think about it if they don't take the offer. I'd say there's a 70% chance they'll call you back. Boats are not moving in this area right now, the season's winding down, and sellers are over-optimistic on their pricing.

$1800 - $2200 tops....

Cool looking boat, dig the lines of the 90 Capri!

Marine inspection a must!

Your gonna end up wanting a 4.3L

I say its overpriced, I am assuming the new bilge is a pump, which is not much $$. I have my boat up for sale, I am asking 5500 for it and it has been fully restored and the expensive maintenance has been done i.e. bellows gimbal impeller, ect. Its also has a new interior, floors and has been professionally resprayed. I would say that boat is worth less than 2k if it has not had any majors done in the last few years.

Underpowered and over priced. Yeah, the hull is light weight, but that is still a lot of displacement to get moving. I am with bear-69-cuda, only I would think if the deck, stringers, and transom check out I would go $2300. I know a hundred bucks don't sound like much, but could be all the difference in the end.

If you have the three large, find another G and look a couple years newer. They are out there and this is the time to buy.

hmmmm - you sure its a 20 footer? My larson 18 footer looks alot like that in my pics from that angle. Given it has a single axle trailer and a 3.0 I may be a little skeptical on size. Anyways, my friend has a 19 footer with 3.0 in it and he is disapointed with the power, so a 20 footer would not be any better. And............without question a professional survey.

Don't be fooled by the trailer being single or tandem. My buddy has a 21' Rinker on a single axle trailer and another buddy has a 19 1/2' Crownline on a tandem. Trailers in that range can be either/or. Also, they are not all built the same. Some are "generic", the bunks can be modified to fit several boat hulls. Others are custom, built for a particular boat in mind, and are not adjustable to another boat. It all depends on the boat and gross weight. Smaller motors=less weight. Hull thickness, interior layout, fuel cell, and other factors can raise or lower a boats gross weight.
Also, there is the "customer factor". I want a tandem...I don't want to pay extra for a tandem...so on and so on.

For the most part, Bayliners are entry level boats. Built with a sole purpose of getting people into them. If every 20 or 21 footer came with a tandem, they would be more expensive and people would be less likely to buy them.

Re: what's she worth (boat)

thanks for the comments guys keep them coming.

yep 2 grand is what i was thinking for it. wanted to make sure i wasn't thinking way too low. NADA has it between 1800-2200.
if the motor doesn't run out prefectly it won't be coming home. mech inspection is def a thought.

Re: what's she worth (boat)

A poster above left really good advice. Provided it runs and is solid, and given the time of yr, leave an offer for the boat in the $2000 range and have them call you if they decide to take it.
I just had a friend looking at large trawlers up here in the Puget sound area and offered 54K on a listing for 65K. The owner immediately declined the offer, however a month and a half later the boat was being advertised at a lower price than my friend even offered.

Every seller is different and their reasons for selling usually are not going to be disclosed as they are looking for their best price as well. After they show the boat a half dozen times and get offers of 1500 to 1750, your 2000 doesn't look so bad.

Of course they may sell the boat to someone else, however at the end of the day you want to be comfortable with the boat and what you paid for it.

Re: what's she worth (boat)

Lets put it this way. If its a turnkey boat, and its in your price range, how many other boats are out there like that?

I mean your not going to find significant improvement or decline in that price range. You really can't get much lower, and you really can't get much better until you jump up about 2k more.

Its all a personal choice.

Re: what's she worth (boat)

Can you post some more interior and exterior shots? If it is a 20 footer, that'd make it a model 2050. It looks like it books out at 2100 lbs. Probably at least 1000lbs lighter than a modern 20 footer. I think 2100 lbs is the sweet spot for the 3.0's out there. I know it is cheap when deciding on a survey but at that age you should get a professional opinion so you are not buying someone else's problems. I do like the look of that vintage Capri and I have an older one yet that we like a lot.

Re: what's she worth (boat)

ok here are a couple more pics of it. yes the model is 2050 according to the ad. I haven't seen it in person yet. going to see it Sun afternoon.

must be the season, just found a '91 Sea Ray same price but looks very nice. only it's a 17 foot with a 4.3 in it though. I was hoping to stay 18 or larger but may take a gander at that one as well.

for the folks saying leave an offer, that goes without saying. LOL I have never paid asking price on anything.

yes I know this is a low price range, it just so happens that most of the boats that catch my eye are in the range. I really love the styling of the Capris.

Re: what's she worth (boat)

I really like the red white and blue color palette. Sorry what I meant to say was that in relation to the price of the boat, a survey is expensive but potentially a huge money saver. Even beyond the money, in a short boating season a month of downtime can wreck your season. I'd have no problem with the looks of that boat if it was in really pristine condition. That is a lot of years to find one in pristine, original shape. The remodeled ones tend to have nice but unoriginal styled interiors because of the difficulty and expense of recreating the original. I am a big fan of the v6 though in that Sea Ray you mentioned. You'd be suprised at how well a v6 can perform even in heavy boats. My v6 pushes my loaded up 3700lbs of boat, gear and people very respectable considering it is only 190hp (just under 50mph on gps). Keep posting pictures of what you are looking at.

I know what you mean about the V6. LOL I have a feeling I'll at the very least be looking at that one as well. I am definitely a fan of MORE POWER grunt grunt. LOL
I do like the extra length of this though also. Who knows, definitely not a must buy time for me so just poking around.

I do appreciate the advice on the survey.
