Can I replace a freeze plug on the back of the motor without removing the motor?
I have a 1978 Mercruiser 120. I have a hot water leak inside the boat when the engine is running and have narrowed its origin to within the "bell housing". I can see the water leaking from there. I also disconnected the water hose going to the exhaust manifold and blew air through the engine end and could hear air coming from within the bell housing area.

I'm a pretty good car mechanic but know little about boats (this last month has been an experience) I'm convinced there is a freeze plug blown out in the back of the engine. This is supported by the fact that one of the freeze plugs on the side of the engine is pushed almost all the way out. The question: Can I remove the bell housing enough to replace the freeze plug? or does the engine have to come out for this repair?

Thanks for your help
Mike sully@wi.rr.com
